In late 2005,the Board of Directors of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia (MSNVA) focused their energy on seeking solutions for vulnerable patients in need of specialty care. At about the same time, INOVA Alexandria Hospital's Healthy Communities Access Program (HCAP) began exploring the feasibility of creating such a system. The two initiatives were combined in mid-2006 and have become known as Project Access of Northern Virginia (PANV).
The Physician Recruitment Committee,
also known as the "Physician Champion Group", is tasked with recruiting Volunteer Physician Specialists to join PANV's network.

A Mother-Daughter Weekend
Volunteering Mexican Style
(By Christine Shanahan (daughter of Brenda Dintiman, MD)
A mother-daughter weekend usually consists of a trip to the lake or a weekend in New York shopping but not this time. It was a Mother-Daughter weekend Mexican style. After hearing Dr. Roberto Estrada speak last year, my mother decided that we should try to give a little back by volunteering. Other than exchanging a few e-mails about the basic logistics of the trip, we really had no idea what to expect. I had been to Cozumel, Mexico, but Acapulco was a mystery to me. It is known for its beaches and cliff divers but we had no idea what the mountain towns of Guerrera would be like.
Even though I am 16 years old and have taken 5 years of Spanish, I still don’t feel comfortable speaking the language. I set out to go on this mother-daughter volunteer weekend. The program takes a group of dermatologists and other support people to a different town in the state of Guerrero, Mexico for a weekend of volunteering every month.

COMMUNITY NEWS-

This year Dr. Mather will be participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in CHICAGO on May 31-June 1, 2008. We are all committed to fighting breast cancer, and with your support we CAN make a difference!
You can click here to make a donation online. Whatever you can give will help!
Thank you in advance for giving what you can!
Last year Dr. Mather and a team of five women walked 40 miles and raised over $15,000 in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer "I got involved because my sister-in-law was diagnosed at the age of 30. What I learned through my involvement is that this disease affects everyone in some way—maybe you, your mother, aunt, sister, co-worker, or best friend”.
The statistics are staggering: three million women are living with breast cancer-and one third don’t even know it. Breast cancer kills approximately one woman every 14 minutes! Since 1992, the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade has returned more than $250 million for the cause.
“I will continue to support this effort until we find a cure”, says Dr. Mather. “There isn’t a single woman I know that hasn’t either been affected herself, or had a friend, co-worker, or family member with this disease. It is up to us women to save ourselves, and fight for funding, research, and treatments that will save us all.”
